Sony Acquires Evo - What is the future of Smash?
Well... this was out of nowhere. If you don't know already, Sony, the makers of the PlayStation have acquired Evo. More casual gamers might ask, well, what is Evo? Well my dear reader, Evo is the biggest e-sports event for fighting games at the moment, so this is a huge announcement for anyone in the fighting game scene. Not only does this mean new games might get chances to shine, but it also means for the remaining games the prize pool will be much bigger and games might even gain more attraction because of it! All of this might sound great, but there is one audience of players that are worried for their games' future. That audience is the Super Smash Bros. community, and the reason that their worried is obvious, Sony is one of the two big competitors that Nintendo has. Therefore, fans are now worrying that Smash will be cut from the lineup forever. Rather it be from Sony or Nintendo not allowing the game to appear. For Smash players, this announcement could have not come at a worse time because they're still struggling to even get their game to appear at other venues because Nintendo tends to be very stingy with their IPs. Now, Nintendo actually has made a response. In this response they state, they will "continue to assess Evo, and other opportunities", this might sound hopeful, but many Smash players are still worried. For example popular Smash Melee player Hungrybox, retweeted the Nintendo response and said translation: "later nerds". This means that he is certain that Nintendo won't allow Smash to come back. Others have supported this theory since it wouldn't make sense for Nintendo to advertise their IP in a competitors event. Other than that, there isn't much more information about the partnership. To conclude many communities are excited to see what will happen, but the Smash community is worried if they can even play in the event. My expectations for this are very low. I think it's great that other games can now be given more exposure and prize money, but regarding Smash, I have to agree with Hungrybox. I don't think it's coming back, but hey, people can hope and that includes me!
